A new century of discovery
North Lake School’s curriculum is aligned with the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy and Mathematics. Science, social studies, and specialized classes are guided by the Wisconsin Academic Standards. The overall instructional program is balanced and integrated through thematic grade level units. The goal is to provide enriching experiences through learning activities that support our school mission. Students are actively involved in the teaching and learning process as they discover new knowledge, develop positive attitudes, communicate effectively with our school community.
Four year old kindergarten through second grade are organized in self-contained classrooms and focus on meeting the needs of individual students. Strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics are taught and assessed by our team of primary teachers. Grades 3 and 4 have core classes which are taught by two teachers specializing in literacy/social studies or math/science. All content subjects are integrated across the curriculum. The academic program in 4K-4th grade is held to high standards and focuses on the acquisition of independent work habits, personal responsibility, and relevant learning.
The middle school (Grades 5-8) programming includes an eight-period day including the core subjects of math, English language arts/literacy, science, and social studies. This comprehensive schedule focuses not only on preparation for high school years, but college and beyond. Our middle school team of teachers is supportive and strives to reach each student’s full potential while at North Lake School.
Instruction in the fine arts and foreign language (Spanish) is an important part of our curriculum. 5K-6th grade receive art and music instruction as part of their core academic schedule. Seventh and eighth graders have rich opportunities to pursue their fine arts through a comprehensive elective schedule. Instrumental music is another programming option for interested students in grades 5-8. North Lake students’ physical and health development is met through the services of certified physical education and health teachers. Further, there are extra-curricular clubs and activities that enhance North Lake School’s academic and physical education programs.
Computer technology has become an emphasis in North Lake School’s curriculum integration program. Every student 5K-8th grade is logged into the computer network with abilities to access a variety of educational programs, digital versions of content area textbooks, and online resources complementing our cutting edge curriculum. Finally, our middle school offers the Project Lead the Way/Gateway to Technology classes in seventh and eighth grade. There are many other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) connections in a student’s 4K-8 educational experience at North Lake School as well.
