504 Information

Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability. Section 504 is an anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met.

An individual with a disability means any person who:

1. has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities
2. has a record of such an impairment
   OR
3. is regarded as having such an impairment.

Life activities are delineated as follows: caring for one’s self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, etc.

If you have concerns about your child having a disability that does not allow him or her to access the curriculum adequately, please contact Jill Lesch, School Counselor and 504 Coordinator. There will be a referral and team evaluation to determine eligibility and, if appropriate, regular education accommodations.
