Counseling Corner
Hi North Lake Families!
Earlier this year I wrote about the Zones of Regulation. This is something that we talk about in all of the primary grades. I refer back to it with the middle schoolers when we talk about the importance of taking care of big emotions and how not taking care of those affects our mental health, relationships, and decision making.
The goal in the Zones is not to avoid big feelings, but learn how to get our bodies regulated again and ready to be a good learner and friend. In first grade we make Cool Down Toolboxes that are filled with tools, feel good pictures, and whatever else helps us get back to the green zones. You can add to those toolboxes at home or make your own!
Each year we talk about some strategies that help us cool down. Here are some favorites you could try at home:
Lemon Squeeze: Pretend to hold two lemons in your hands. Squeeze them and pretend that you are making lemonade. Count to five and release the lemons.
Balloon Breath: Breath in through your nose. Breathe out through your mouth – pretending to blow up a balloon. Do this several times. (Breathing is SO helpful in regulating our bodies!)
Take a Break: Remove yourself from the situation that is causing you to be dysregulated. Come back when you are in the Green Zone.
We have so many other ideas that I can share. Let me know if you’d like me to give you some resources or work with your child on practicing some tools.
