mental heath

Hello North Lake Families!

May is Mental Health Awareness month. For our younger students, this means learning how to handle “big feelings.” For our older students, we focus on stress management and understanding mental health conditions.

The more we talk about emotions at home, the more supported our children feel. Here are two easy ways to check in:

  • For Younger Students: Reading together is a great bridge. I have many books on emotional health available to borrow, or I can send a list of recommendations your way!
  • For Older Students: Try a “car ride check-in.” Sometimes it’s easier for teens to talk when they don’t have to make direct eye contact.

Last week, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) spoke with our 8th graders. They led important discussions on:

  • Breaking the “stigma” around mental health.
  • How to support a friend in need.
  • Identifying “safe adults” to talk to when things feel heavy.

If you have questions about specific lessons or need resources for your child, please reach out.

As always, please let me know if there are any ways that I can support your child!

Take care-

Jill Lesch

Riding the Wave of Wellness

Sun

As warmer weather approaches and students spend more time being active outdoors, I wanted to take a moment to talk about asthma and the importance of proper inhaler use.

Albuterol inhalers can quickly relieve asthma symptoms, but they are intended as rescue medications — not for everyday, long-term use. Needing a rescue inhaler frequently may be a sign that asthma is not well controlled and that underlying airway inflammation is not being adequately treated. Overuse of albuterol can also cause side effects such as a rapid heartbeat, jitteriness, headaches, and decreased effectiveness over time.

In general, children who need albuterol more than twice a week (outside of exercise-related use) should follow up with their healthcare provider to review their asthma management plan. When prescribed, daily controller medications help prevent symptoms before they start and reduce the risk of serious asthma attacks.

It is also important to remind students that inhalers are medical devices, not accessories or toys. Some children may view inhalers as “trendy” or use them casually around friends, but using an inhaler incorrectly or unnecessarily can be dangerous and may mask poorly controlled asthma symptoms. Parents can support healthy habits by talking openly with their children about the purpose of asthma medications and the importance of using them only as prescribed. Encouraging responsible use and proper inhaler technique helps children stay healthy, safe, and confident in managing their asthma.

Hope you all have a beautiful spring!
